A fresh wave of fine dining restaurants has washed up in Sydney’s Lower North Shore and among them is the dazzling new Charlotte Bar & Bistro.
This charming French diner brings a touch of elegance to McMahons Point with its impressive 60-page wine list and nostalgic menu featuring a signature dish duck and beef en-croûte that must be ordered 24 hours in advance.
Charlotte Bar & Bistro is the latest venture for the Azabu group, whose portfolio currently includes Hanasuki, Chef’s Table and Kame House. They recruited chef Hiroshi Manaka to lead the kitchen whose resume includes Michelin-starred establishments across Europe and five years at fine-diner Lumi in Pyrmont. Now, he channels that wealth of knowledge into crafting exciting renditions of French classics at Charlotte Bar & Bistro.
The show stopping menu is split into snacks, oysters and caviar, entrees, mains and share plates. You could start with foie gras churros and snail gyoza, before enjoying lobster ravioli, roasted snapper with bonne femme sauce and steak frites with mushroom sauce.
Charlotte Bar & Bistro’s pièce de résistance is its signature boeuf en-croûte royal (duck and beef wrapped in pastry) with foie gras, mushroom and madeira jus. Designed for sharing, this masterpiece requires a day’s notice to prepare. You can accompany it with other stand-out share plates including whole lobster with garlic and rosemary butter, bisque and conchiglie; duck crown with candied mandarin and cashew nuts; or dry-aged black onyx Angus 1kg rib eye with tarragon sauce and seaweed butter.
End your dining experience on a sweet note with chocolate mousse, apple tart or a plate of cheeses.
Charlotte Bar & Bistro also impresses with its exquisite beverage selection. The 60-page drinks list is a testament to their love for French wines, with Champagne and French drops dominating the list. The drinks menu also includes cocktails, mocktails, beers and spirits, with a strong selection of local drops too.
Whether you’re in the mood to dress up or down, the restaurant welcomes you for any occasion. Its rustic yet glamorous charm makes it suitable for all occasions. Downstairs, a public dining room leads to a French Riviera-inspired outdoor terrace, while upstairs houses a private dining room and function room with its own bar.
