Internationally recognised musician and conductor finds our COVID lockdowns do have a silver lining
Have you been missing the beauty of being able to listen to world class live classical music on the North Shore? Then we have good news for you…
When acclaimed Australian conductor Vladimir Fanshil found himself in Sydney with his young family as COVID-19 lockdowns began in March 2020, he didn’t imagine he’d still be here almost two years later. But Europe’s loss is our gain, as Vladimir is leading a musical return to the stage through his own performance company Live At Yours, and we are fortunate that our local community is a part of it.
“We feel a strong connection to the North Shore and believe that it’s a very family friendly area of Sydney but also one that doesn’t shy away from tall poppies and excellence,” Vladimir said.
Having worked with orchestras such as the Luxembourg Philharmonic, Konzerthaus Berlin, Mariinsky theatre and then Odessa Philharmonic, Vladmir has come a long way from learning the piano at home with his mother in Sydney.
Vladmir was born in Ukraine and came to Sydney as a 5-year-old, where he excelled in music and later studied at the Sydney Conservatorium before heading overseas to a place at the St Petersburg Conservatorium. During the pandemic, Vladimir and his wife, Australian opera singer Eleanor Lyons, worked on a repertoire together, and took their show on the road to some more intimate settings.
“We were in Australia as Eleanor was singing the lead role in Don Giovanni with Opera Australia. We were rehearsing together and decided that performing for a small audience is better than no audience, so as soon as restrictions started easing, we began performing in people’s homes,” Vladimir said.
“We’ve had all sorts of amazing experiences including performing in a tin shed in Yass with dogs in the audience, to performing in fancy clubs such as the Queen’s Club in Sydney, to performing in a Canberra home with a number of diplomats and media personalities.”
The Independent Theatre North Sydney: Live Classical Music on the North Shore
Live At Yours is staging two concerts in December in the lead up to Christmas at the Independent Theatre in North Sydney, and has more planned for 2022.
“We absolutely fell in love with the architecture of the Independent Theatre and thought it would be the perfect home for Live at Yours concerts in 2022. It’s also easily accessible to a large proportion of Sydney, parking is easy and the acoustics are simply magnificent! We’ve also got beautiful lighting there and warm atmosphere will emerge from hosting concerts there,” he said.
December 7: Daniel Rojas with Ensemble Apex
First is Chilean-born pianist and composer Daniel Rojas performing Latin American music with the Ensemble Apex String quartet on December 7. It’s an upbeat production that takes you on a journey through Latin America with some impressive and entertaining piano improvisations.

2022: Concert and Cake Series
The “Concert and Cake” Sunday afternoon series will feature performances from string quartets, cello soloists, opera singers, and a flamenco ensemble.
“We will be dishing up a selection of stunning French cakes before the concert prepared by Madame and Yves and each concert will have audience interaction to break down the formal barriers of concerts. As we always aim to involve the finest artists in the country, we believe that virtuosity and brilliance can affect anyone if delivered the right way at close range,” Vladmir said.
“We’d love to see families coming to these concerts as we dream of making high-quality music accessible and normal to all ages! This is why we’ll be offering free tickets to children with a ticketed adult (limited number), discounted youth tickets for under 30’s and pensioner seats too,” he said.

“At the moment we are loving being back in Sydney after 15 years spent living in Europe. We are flying back and forth frequently and trying to establish Live at Yours as a long term project. The future – post-covid no-one really knows, but as long as we’re making music and creating opportunities for others to perform and experience incredible art, we’re happy!”
