What’s in a name, you ask? Dozo in Japanese means “Go ahead” or “After you” and the 88 refers to its location on the ground floor of Mall 88 on Christie Street, St Leonards. The interiors of this yakiniku restaurant evoke a sense of understated luxury; think plush seating in muted colours, dark wooden panelling and soft mood lighting. Now serving lunch and dinner every day to North Shore residents and office-goers alike, this Japanese restaurant also has a private dining room that seats 10-20 guests and can be booked for special occasions like birthday parties or office functions.

If you’re wondering what yakiniku is all about, think of it as a Japanese barbecue. In fact, the word yakiniku literally translates to ‘grilled meat’. Yakiniku’s roots can be traced back to the Korean barbecue called ‘gogigui’ where thinly sliced meats are  grilled over a charcoal fire, imbibing the food with its telltale smoky flavour. Introduced in Japan by Korean immigrants after WW2, it became popular thanks to the way this method of cooking used every part of the animal, including its innards. Yes, long before ‘top to tail’ became a concept in Western countries.

So, what’s on the menu at Dozo By 88? How about top of the range Japanese and Australian Wagyu beef sizzling over a hot grill with an array of condiments and dipping sauces. Or, a sashimi platter showcasing the freshest seafood. Speaking of seafood, they also have live lobster, scampi and top grade tuna dishes on the menu. Not to be missed is their signature dish, Truffle Foie Gras Rice, while a  well-stocked bar serves everything from sake and Japanese beer to signature cocktails. The yakiniku dining experience is best shared, so make sure to visit Dozo By 88 with your family and friends. Gochisousama deshita!
