In excellent news for fans of yakitori, ramen and Japanese whiskey, a new 3-storey culinary delight featuring all three has just opened in Crows Nest.

Yakitori Yurippi has been a staple in Crows Nest’s dining scene for over eight years, serving up delicious chargrilled yakitori skewers to thousands of hungry locals (and many from further afield) who came for a taste of authentic Japanese street food.

But when the lease was up on their old Falcon St premises with the building due to be demolished, it sowed the seed for the owners, the Hatena Group, to conceive of a new dining experience the North Shore hasn’t seen before.

The group have now taken over the old Bravo Trattoria space with Yurippi on the bottom floor, Aura, a ramen restaurant on the first floor, and Ichiros, a Japanese sports bar coming soon to the top floor.

We spoke to Chris Wu, one of the three owners, about how the concept came to fruition.

“Well, the bottom floor was always going to be moving Yakitori Yurippi over,” says Chris. “Opening our first ramen shop was always an aim of ours. And us three co-owners all love sports, so a Japanese-inspired sports bar made sense.”

The Yurippi team successfully transitioned from their old location with a soft launch over the Easter long weekend, announcing it via a well-received Instagram post. Despite the expected soft opening chaos, with the last service at the previous spot just four days earlier, the new space was a hit, welcoming both familiar faces and new fans.

Diners who remember the original Yurippi can expect the same quality in their food and service, with more seating options and as Chris hinted, “slightly later hours if the demand is there”.

The new space is modelled on the same ‘izakaya’ type of informal Japanese bar that serves alcoholic drinks and snacks. A refreshed menu with plenty of the original yakitori delights awaits diners. From Pork Jowl with with Shallots and Yuzu Pepper to Chicken Heart and Slow Cooked Ox Tongue with Miso sauce to Chicken Gizzard and Soft Bones.

For the less adventurous, there is pork belly, chicken thigh and shallot, wagyu beef, and a range of delicious vegetable options like Okra with Ponzu and Bonito, Corn with Salt and Butter, King Mushroom, and Zucchini drizzled with miso. We’ve heard the Miso Sake Cod and Unagi Eel are crowd favourites.

When it comes to drinks, there is an extensive list from soft drinks to sakes, but if it’s an authentic experience you’re after, try one of the whiskey highballs, which “goes so well with yakitori” says Chris.

Ramen Auru on the second floor has just soft launched, and once the three venues are open, the team anticipate patrons moving between the venues, and staying to experience all three in one night if the mood takes them.

“Hopefully, the ideal night would be starting off with a yakitori dining experience at Yurippi, followed by some drinks at Ichiro’s,” says Chris. “After that, a quick late night ramen at Auru and to top it off a final drink up at Ichiro’s.”

Ramen fans will be very excited to try the ticket vending machine at Auru, where they can choose from bespoke sides, toppings and drinks. It’s less of a vending machine (it doesn’t drop down noodle soup), and more of an ordering system for the kitchen to deliver piping hot broth and rich tonkotsu ramen.

We’re told Ichiro’s should open very soon, and will be serving Japanese-inspired bar snacks alongside their drinks menu.

“We’ll be showing all the regular sports locals love, including NRL, rugby union, AFL, tennis, cricket, soccer, UFC, and formula one plus Japanese sumo and Japanese baseball,” says Chris.
